We have come a long way since that time, and we certainly no longer feel that we have to start our own presentations with that slide. However, in a book like this, a brief introduction to Linux in general can provide an appropriate entry into our discussion of SUSE Linux in particular. Linux is a multiuser, multitasking, multiplatform computer operating system (strictly speaking, an operating system kernel) that has been developed by an open source, collaborative process involving large numbers of people all over the world. Linux is a “Unix-like” operating system. This means that it conforms closely to a set of conventions and standards associated with Unix; however, Linux does not contain any of the original Unix code.

Linux has been developed by the open source development method. What that means is that all the work that is done by Linux developers is open and shared. It is open to peer review, which encourages honesty and means that each developer is able to build upon work that has already been done by others. Although this method is often still seen as revolutionary in the field of software development, it is effectively the same method that has been used by science in the Western world since about the time of Newton. The development of Western science has been spectacularly successful precisely because it is based on the same values of openness and shared results and because of the quality assurance provided by the scrutiny of peer review.

This model works so well both in science and software because openness leads to scrutiny, and scrutiny leads to improvement and the correction of errors. Openness also means the ability to build on the results of others. Newton himself said that if he saw further than others, it was “by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” This sums up very well the power of collaborative development in any field. It contrasts strongly with the traditional closed source development model: a group of programmers working in secrecy with deadlines for work to be handed to a manager. In such a situation, a team member who knows that his work has a bug in it has no incentive to tell anyone; when the program is finally released, no one outside the small development group can look at the code to understand why it does not work as advertised. In contrast, Eric Raymond coined a phrase to describe the power of having a large open source developer community to debug code: “Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow.”

The dramatic success of Linux and of other associated open source projects such as the Apache web server and Samba are proof of the power of the open source development method.

Linux has come a long way since its beginnings in the early 1990s. In 1991, it was one man’s hobby: Ten years later, in 2001, IBM announced that it was investing one billion dollars in its Linux strategy

However, if you are a first-time Linux user, following instructions for Fedora Core Linux and using the pre-built software packages (in RPM format) can save you some trouble.

In fact, in some cases, you can just boot the Linux Toys II CD itself (which contains a custom version of Damn Small Linux) to get started. Debian is just one of many Linux distributions. Selecting which distribution is best for your deployment can be a rather daunting task. The reason for so many distributions is that the developers or sponsors of each have a different vision of which software should be installed by default, which software is appropriate for particular tasks, and how the system is best administered. This means that selecting a distribution that matches your purpose and preferences will make installation and administration easier.

Linux distributions can be broken down into three branches, named from their original distribution or their package managers: SLS, RPM, and DPKG.

The Softlanding Linux System (SLS) distribution, which evolved into the Slackware distribution, is one of the oldest. Distributions in this branch generally made minimal or no changes to the original software packages before including them. Distributions using this format generally provided no native software management and depended on third-party utilities for package management and administration. These utilities were readily available and often included, so this was not necessarily a disadvantage.

The Debian Packaging System (DPKG/DEB) was developed about the same time as the RPM, and has the same features, although they are implemented differently. DPKG refers to the original software packaging utility. This has been superseded by more flexible and user-friendly utilities, so this branch is often referred to by the extension used by the package files: DEB (.deb). Some distributions in this branch have corporate sponsorship (Ubuntu is the most notable) and thus, have a unified administrative utility, similar to SuSE's YaST for example. Others, such as Debian, depend upon third-party software to fulfill this function. The most common distributions in this branch are Debian and Ubuntu. Most of the others in the branch, such as Mint and BackTrack, are derived from one of these.

Many applications start from something small, such as several hundred lines of code prototype of a toy application written in one evening. The Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern serves as the basis for software architecture that will be easily maintained and modified.

The main idea of MVC is about separating an application into three parts: model, view, and controller. There is an easy way to understand MVC—the model is the data and its business logic, the view is the window on the screen, and the controller is the glue between the two.

While the view and controller depend on the model, the model is independent of the presentation or the controller. This is a key feature of the division. It allows you to work with the model, and hence, the business logic of the application, regardless of the visual presentation.

The following diagram shows the flow of interaction between the user, controller, model, and view. Here, a user makes a request to the application and the controller does the initial processing. After that it manipulates the model, creating, updating, or deleting some data there. The model returns some result to the controller, that passes the result to view, which renders data to the user.

Social engineering comes from two words, social and engineering, where social refers to our day-to-day lives which includes both personal and professional lives while engineering means a defined way of performing a task by following certain steps to achieving the target.

Social engineering is a term that describes a nontechnical intrusion that relies heavily on human interaction and often involves tricking other people to break normal security procedures. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory was forced to terminate the Internet connection for their workers after the federal facility was hacked. According to Thomas Zacharia, Deputy Director of the lab, this attack was sophisticated and he compared it with the advanced persistent threat that hit the security firm RSA and Google last year. The attacker used Internet Explorer to perform zero-day vulnerability to breach the lab's network. Microsoft later patched this vulnerability in April, 2012. The vulnerability, described as a critical remote-code execution vulnerability, allows an attacker to install malware on a user's machine if he or she visits a malicious website. A zero-day vulnerability is a kind of vulnerability present in an application for which the patch has not been released or isn't available.

According to Zacharia, the employees of the HR department received an e-mail that discussed employee benefits and included a link to a malicious website. This mail was sent to 530 employees, out of which 57 people clicked on the link and only two machines got infected with the malware. So as we can see, it's not very difficult to get inside a secured network. Many such attacks are covered in the following chapters.

There are plenty of excellent introductory works already available both online and in print, so we didn't want to waste your time by providing yet another "blinking LED" tutorial. We figure that if you've gotten as far as picking up a 400+ page book about Arduino it's a good sign that you're ready for something a bit more substantial and wanting to learn more about the why rather than just the how.

We don't want you to be just a color-by-numbers painter, only able to assemble other peoples’ designs by dutifully plugging in wires according to a position overlay without really understanding the meaning behind it. We want you to become a true artist, able to conceptualize, design, and assemble your own creations.

We would be terribly disappointed if all our readers just reproduced our projects exactly as presented in the book, never deviating from the script. We want you to take these projects as inspiration and examples of how to apply a variety of handy techniques and then adapt them to suit your own requirements, coming up with new ideas that put ours to shame. We also hope that you'll share your creations with us and with the world, inspiring others in turn.

So we haven't included assembly overlays, and we don't expect you to slavishly follow a series of steps to exactly reproduce what we've prototyped. Instead we've included circuit diagrams, parts lists, photos, and in-depth explanations. That may seem a little scary and the idea of learning how to read a schematic may feel overwhelming, but a little effort invested to learn this fundamental skill will pay off many times over as you progress to designing and debugging your own projects.

Thus we have consciously left material out of Practical Arduino. We do not, for example, cover how to set up basic software tools such as the Arduino IDE. This is for two reasons—firstly because it is described very well on the http://arduino.cc web site itself, and secondly because anything that we provide in written form here will be out of date in a few short months! Instead we focused on providing the sort of information and background explanation that you will continue to draw on for years to come.

We hope that by following through the projects in this book, assembling some for yourself and reading through the others, you will gain a number of insights into the flexibility of Arduino as a platform for taking software and hardware and linking them to the physical world around us.
