Sinopsis
In particular, I think one of the biggest problems evolving out of the current dance music scene is the attitude banded around by various media that the entire production ethic is down to a few ‘secrets’, and with nothing more than a laptop and a quick tutorial that reveals these ‘secrets’, you too can be knocking out hits like Skrillex or David Guetta.
Whilst I wouldn’t argue that it is possible to produce a good quality dance track on little more than a laptop and some carefully chosen software, I would argue that good music production amounts to much more than spending a few hours with a magazine or video tutorial!
There are no secrets to producing dance music, and there are certainly no shortcuts either. To be successful as an EDM artist today, you need to be fluent in music theory, composition, arranging, recording, synthesis, sound design, producing, mixing, mastering and promotion, and have an understanding of computers. This takes time to learn and time to practice.
Simply put, producing EDM dance music is far more involved than many first realize. Whilst on face value the music can appear superficially simple, it involves an incredibly intricate and multifaceted process of production ethics. Even something as simple in appearance as the basic house drum loop requires knowledge of synthesis, compression, reverb, delay, filters, limiters and mixing alongside techniques such as syncopation, polymeter, polyrhythm, hyperbeat, compound time and both frequency and pitch modulation. And that’s before you even consider composing a bass line. Indeed, the real trick with dancemusic is making something extremely complex appear incredibly simple. And the simpler it appears, the more complex it usually is to produce.
